Radian resident’s mobility experience

Resident Steve Holden tells us of his experience using a mobility scooter, and offers some sound advice…

In 2007 I became disabled following an illness. This meant that I had to use a mobility scooter if I wanted to get out and about as I could no longer walk. From the moment I first sat on my scooter my eyes were opened to whole new world of daily challenges that I’d taken for granted before.

My routes had to be planned in advance. I had to find out where the nearest dropped kerbs and crossings were, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get on the pavement. Fortunately, Lindford has some excellent crossing points but other villages aren’t so scooter-friendly.

There are issues to contend with but it’s not all doom and gloom. Having my scooter has given me back some independence. I get out, go places and meet people. We are fortunate to have some very good accessible walks around Lindford, so I can enjoy the area I live in.

I would recommend getting a scooter to anyone who has mobility issues. It’s also worth checking if you qualify for a scooter through the Motability Scheme too. Their website is: www.motability.co.uk
