Sheltered Housings' blooming success !

Drum Housing Association's sheltered housing schemes' annual gardening competition went ahead despite the heavy summer rain. There were more entries than ever this year, competing in the three competition categories; best communal garden, best bungalow garden and best flowering basket. The standard was exceptional, with little evidence of the difficult conditions gardeners have faced from the inclement weather.

Richard Yalden, an experienced local gardener who writes a regular gardening column for Drums resident magazine, Voices, and Vida Hine from Age Concern in Petersfield, judged the competition. Each entry was judged against a set of agreed criteria to enable the judges to make their final decision.

"The standard was very impressive", said Richard Yalden. "It was fantastic to see the fruits of everyones labours. We were faced with tough decisions in every category. We would like to have made everyone a winner!"

The eventual winners were; Siward House, Petersfield, who won the best communal garden award, Mr White from Headley won the best bungalow garden trophy and Mrs Green from Chestnut Court, Bordon, won the best hanging basket shield. Framed certificates were awarded to everyone who took part.

Sheltered Scheme Manager for Siward House, Lyn Picton, said, "The residents at Siward put an enormous amount of energy into the competition. Many of them are experienced gardeners and they made a fabulous job of the gardens. Everyone is delighted with the win. Next year's entry is already under discussion!"
