Drum Helps in Lessons of Safety

Drum Housing Association has provided funding for some innovative teaching materials to The Petersfield School in Hampshire this week, as part of their commitment to working in the communities and the Respect Standard for Housing Management.

The text books produced by the Childrens Safety Education Foundation (CSEF) are part of the Respect agenda, and promote key safety messages to the children.

Petra Norris, Housing Manager explains, Drum places anti-social behaviour high on its list of priorities, as it is an important issue to those suffering it.  Part of our strategy to tackle it relates to young peoples safety, and so working with local schools is an important step towards it.

The CSEF produces a wide range of educational publications aimed at promoting safety messages to young people. The books provide a valuable teaching resource to schools in their exploration of issues such as smoking, drugs and bullying.

"The children enjoyed the way the books are written," says Paul Harvey, Head of Personal Social Education at The Petersfield School, and I am delighted that the topics are so relevant to them.  Teachers will find the materials a highly useful tool for discussing some of the more difficult areas of life that young people face on a daily basis.

Drum has a history of working with young people in its local communities, and events that they have organised include summer schemes with local premier football club Portsmouth, hiring Scary Guy, the tattooed man to give inspirational non-judgement presentations and rollerblading lessons for the under 12s.

This, and various other projects that we undertake are an important part of the wider role that we play in the community, explains Sandra Theckston, Director of Drum,  ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
