He weighs 20 stone, has tattoos across his face and arms, is peppered with piercings and his name is Scary Guy. Not someone you might expect to teach school children about the dangers of prejudice and the true meaning of respect! But Drum Housing Association have just sponsored Scary Guy to do exactly that at Petersfield School and Eggars School in Alton.

The Scary Guy, who legally changed his name, travels the world to eliminate hate, violence and prejudice. His mission is to promote tolerance and acceptance amongst people, regardless of race, appearance or religion, worldwide. He uses his appearance as a powerful tool to help children understand how appearance can prejudice opinions. His work is increasingly attracting attention and has recently been the focus of a documentary due to be premiered at the Munich Film Festival next month.

During his visit to Petersfield and Eggars schools Scary Guy put on a show in the morning and worked with smaller groups during the afternoon. Scary Guy said, "We had an absolutely incredible day at Peterfield High School and Eggars High School was fantastic. Both days were filled with very powerful moments. I'm very proud of everyone; teachers, students and all the support staff involved. These two days will not be forgotten."

The impact on the children was summed up by Nick Teeling, age 13, of Petersfield School, who said, "When Scary Guy came we didn't know what to expect, we were unaware of him. Half way through the session we were riveted to our seats, at the end we were hugging each other. You have got to respect that guy!" Drum organised the workshops as part of their commitment to improving communities and encouraging young people to make a positive contribution.

Customer Focus Manager, Josephine Roberts said, "Scary Guy is a great education to young people. His impact on them is incredible. They not only learn how prejudices can poison a community but also how communities become so much richer when they embrace rather than exclude different people."

The workshops have been so successful that Drum are now looking for sponsors to help them extend the workshops to other schools in the area. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for one of your local schools, contact Josephine on 01730 403022 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
