REEMA Houses Demolished

14th March 2006

Drum resident Jean Tribe swung into action this morning, lending a helping hand with the demolition of REEMA houses on Grange Road.

Number 39 Grange Road is an old-style pre-fabricated REEMA house which was built after the Second World War in order to relieve the huge demand for housing in Petersfield at that time.  However, these properties were only ever meant to have a short life-span, and have instead been around for over sixty years.

Jean has lived at 23 Grange Road for 28 years: "My home was a little damp and very hard to keep warm, which has had a big impact on the heating bills".

Jean was helping to knock down the first REEMA house to be demolished which stands on the very site where her new home will be built: "I just can't wait for these houses to be demolished and for the new houses to be built!  I am hoping to be in my new home by Christmas 2006".

Drum has worked in consultation with the residents of the REEMA houses in order to accomplish their particular needs.  In the longer term, some residents have chosen to have their homes demolished and to have brand new houses instead, and some have asked for their REEMA properties to be refurbished to a 'decent homes' standard.

Residents such as Jean whose house is being demolished have moved to temporary accommodation whilst their new homes are being built.  Once again, Drum worked with each individual household ot ensure that their needs were taken into account when such accommodation was being set up.
